About Our Investment In Who Gives A Crap

Who Gives A Crap was founded by Simon Griffiths, Danny Alexander and Jehan Ratnatunga who learnt that 2.3 billion people across the world don’t have access to a toilet.

In response, they started a company that sells toilet paper, using 100% recycled paper fibres, bamboo or sugarcane. It’s forest friendly, and 50% of the profits are donated to help building toilets for people who don’t have them.

IIG provided a working capital loan to the company in March 2015.

Who gives a crap

As the company says “Poor sanitation causes serious illness and if people get sick, they can’t feed their families or go to school.” Providing toilets helps address sanitation problems, hence Who Gives A Crap’s donations.

The source for their recycled paper is mostly schools and offices, via their producer. They choose bamboo for their premium products, because its a fast-growing plant and environmentally friendly to farm.

Impact

We only made a small investment, so we're putting this here to congratulate them.

In 2017, Who Gives A Crap reached $1,175,000 in total donations towards toilets and sanitation. They partner with international NGO, WaterAid who work across Africa, Asia, Central America and the Pacific region to bring people access to clean water, decent toilets and educate communities about hand washing to prevent disease. Who Gives A Crap also helps fund Sanergy to build and franchise waterless loos called Fresh Life Toilets in Nairobi’s slums.
